Many versions of the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter have come and gone but this one will remain forever.
Why? Because of the production by Studio Ghibli and who doesn’t know about Studio Ghibli, and the direction by Isao Takahata (an absolute gem after his direction in Grave of the Fireflies 1988, a hit).
Well the Tale of the Princess Kaguya is very simple but extraordinary, easy but enigmatic, well crafted but artistically stunning and most importantly a finest animated movie ever.
People used to watch this in English subtitle and English audio, but if one wants to enjoy the real beauty of this folktale then it should also be watched in Japanese audio with English subtitle enabled or not.
It is not easy to remember the Japanese names but Princess Kaguya, Bamboo cutter and his wife, Lady Sagami and others were very well created and easy to remember.
I will not spoil the whole mood by giving out the details about the beginning of the movie or anywhere after that, to feel this film go and see it. It is that good and I am sure you will not be disappointed.
Those who are fan of Hayao Miyazaki, Goro Miyazaki will definitely love this movie.
